When you look back at the entire NES Library very few games really hold any sort of appeal or are worth playing. River City Ransom is one of the few that holds it's fun. It's a classic side scrolling fight that fans of the Final Fight games will definitely enjoy. I picked up Mighty Final Fight and was disappointed that it was only one player. Luckily RCR filled that void. Let's face it to really enjoy the NES you have to make it a social thing, get some beer and a friend and make a weekend out of it. The game has a lot of innovative features for the time.

First you have a pretty large world for the NES, where you can go forward and back screens as you want, not just a forward progression. Second you collect money from the thugs you beat up, and you can use those to buy new fighting moves, food for health, and various stat leveling items. The game isn't an RPG so don't expect a lot of story, you just beat stuff up. What is shocking is even though we had to go back and forth on the boards for a long time to get the order right for the boses, it was fun the whole time. This game is super fun, and missed my radar back in the day, if you have never played it you should check it out.
